Building Tips
There are countless little things we learn as we work our way through the "educational" process of building an RV sport aircraft. Here's some ideas that might be helpful.
Engine accessory cooling blast tubes
This method of cooling engine accessories was used in my "flying" RV-4, N464EM. Mike Eesley must be credited with this idea. Use it to provide cooling air off the engine baffling to such items as mags, alternator, vacuum pump, etc. It is really simple.
Head down to your local hardware store and buy some lengths of 1/8" diameter brass rod. Also track down some 6-32 brass nuts. Buy some of Van's corrugated plastic tubing that he sells for routing electrical lines.
At the appropriate locations in the baffling, use your Vari-Bit tool to drill a 7/16" hole. Use a 6-32 die to cut threads into one end of a 1/8" brass rod make the rod long enough to reach from the baffle hole to the point where you want to direct the air. Bend the 1/8' diam rod into a 180 degree bend at the threaded end. Drill a hole for the rod next to the 7/16" large hole to hold the rod in place in the center of the hole (using the #6 brass nuts on either side of the baffling to jam the rod into place).
Bend the rod such that it will point to the location you want to direct the air. Install the plastic tubing (the corrugated tubing will fit tightly in the 7/16" hole) such that the brass rod is in the center and you can easily direct the rod exactly where you want to direct the air. Simplicity itself!!
NOTE: In this photo you can clearly see standoffs holding the MP line and primer lines in place on the engine mount tube. Use a nylon Ty-rap and a small piece of Nylock tubing or simple auto fuel line hose. Simple and cheap and easily replaceable.
El Cheapo RV jack
The photos are pretty self explanatory. The jack came from Wal Mart. Whip together from pipe, get some threaded eyelets, do a little drilling. When you jack up the airplane, securely bolt the jack eyelet to the tie-down ring. The jack will move and center itself as you jack up the wing.
Cheap and easy!!!!!!!!!
