John Foy, RV-6A, Waco, TX
Foyboy Five" is the fifth aircraft I have built and flown. It now has 600 hours since new. Two trips to Oshkosh and one trip to Vero Beach, FL. The rest has been local.
I have a VM 1000 instrument package and the Nav Aid wing leveler. Apollo GPS, Narco Transponder and King -97A radio.Lycoming 0-360-AlA 180 hp engine, Hartzell CS prop, electric trim on all three axes, dual brakes, electric flaps, landing lites, Whelen strobe-nav lites and an ADC oil filter plus external steps.
In case anyone is interested, there are 42 optional items other than Van's basic RV- 6A kit. Most of these are essential for flight. This is a standard RV 6A and required 27 months to complete. The weight was high (1140 lbs.)
I painted this one myself but next time the pros get the job. I very seldom use the wing leveler as the RVs are so easy to fly and I enjoy hand flying too much. The constant speed prop is a winner that gives better than excellent climb and really allows one to slow down fast. The electric flaps relieve the old arm pull a lot! With electric three axis trim I can trim out and just lay back. I flight plan at 150 kts for fast cross country burning 10 gals per hour. Speed depends on how much fuel you want to burn and how much time you want to spend in the yellow arc. For the local flying, I'm back to 120 kts, 2300 rpm and 19 to 20 " manifold pressure at a 6 gal per hour burn.
